I'm Yuko Medina, Nurse Practitioner
After working as a nurse in Japan, I moved to the United States driven by a desire to "learn the most advanced nursing systems and become someone who can attend to each person's anxieties and life circumstances." Since then, I have worked in nursing in both Japan and the United States, accumulating over 25 years of experience as a nurse. I currently work in the United States as a Nurse Practitioner—an advanced practice registered nurse who provides care in collaboration with physicians, supporting patients and their families while valuing both a medical perspective and one attentive to daily life.
From Japanese people living in the United States, I have often heard concerns such as: "I'm worried about whether I can explain my symptoms well in English," "I don't know when I should go to the hospital," and "I don't really understand my test results or medical terminology." Feeling unwell in an environment with a different language and healthcare system can be a major source of stress.
Japan Health Navigator was created to be a place where, in moments like these, people can feel "I'm glad I asked" or "I feel a little more at ease." Q. Is this a telemedicine service?
A. No. This is not a telemedicine service, and we do not diagnose, prescribe medication, or provide treatment. We provide general health information and support with navigating the healthcare system, preparing for medical appointments, and organizing the options available to you.
Q. Can you book a hospital or clinic appointment for me?
A. We cannot make an appointment on your behalf, but we can help you find an appropriate clinic and prepare for your visit based on your needs and circumstances.
Q. Can I share my test results with you?
Yes. You may share your test results with us before your consultation; we will explain how to do so in advance. We can help you better understand the results, but you should confirm the final interpretation and any medical decisions with the healthcare professional responsible for your care, such as your primary care provider.
Q. Is consultation only in English?
A. We offer support in both Japanese and English. Our goal is to provide a comfortable environment for Japanese residents in the US who find it difficult to explain medical issues in English.
Q. Is this service covered by insurance?
A. No. This is a private health consultation and advisory service, not an insured medical service. It is not covered by Japan's public health insurance or U.S. health insurance.
Q. What should I do in an emergency?
A. Please call 911 or visit the nearest Emergency Room immediately. We do not provide emergency diagnostic or treatment services and cannot assist in urgent medical situations.
